ABOUT SHIMMY

Michelle Shimmy (or Shimmy, as she is better known) is the co-owner of the Pole Dance Academy in Sydney. Shimmy has a background in rhythmic and artistic gymnastics, belly dance, and aerial circus. Shimmy has been pole dancing since 2006. She has performed and competed in numerous venues around Sydney and internationally.

Shimmy has the been a part of the following competitions:

Miss Pole Dance Australia, 2013, 1st Runner Up
Australian Pole Championships 2012, Winner
Australian Pole Fitness Championships 2012, Winner

Kristy is the 2012 and 2013 Miss Pole Dance Victoria, Australia’s longest running professional pole dancing championship attracting elite level performers from all over the country. These women compete for the title of Miss Pole Dance Australia, and then move on to the international competition. Miss Pole Dance Victoria showcases the best pole dancers in Victoria and Tasmania and the competition will be fierce as they fight for a chance at the national title.

2012 Scholarship Recipients: Pamela and Kirstyn

SELECTION PROCESS

Audition will consist of live performance and an interview. Please prepare a 2 minute performance demonstrating your dance artistry; be sure to engage and entertain your audience with your unique dance style. All levels welcome and no prior pole or dance experience necessary!

PROGRAM DETAILS

The Choreography House Scholarship is a 6-month intense training and development experience beginning in January 2013. Selected dancers will be trained in pole dance, ballet technique, choreography, fitness and flexibility. They will also work closely with Kelly Yvonne to learn THE METHOD for live performances and competitions.

Throughout the scholarship, dancers will make guest appearances in Girl Next Door – a pole dance soiree and Hide and Seek – a pole dance speakeasy. Recipients will become active cast members in Girl Next Door – a pole dance soirée and have the opportunity to join The Choreography House staff upon completion of the scholarship program!

Technique Tip of the Week: POINT YOUR TOES!

One of the questions I am asked most frequently is “How do I improve my toe point?” There are a number of stretches that will help, but the stretch exercises must be combined with strength training as well! Ultimately, just like in pole, your feet need to be strong AND flexible to improve your point!

Exercise: TENDU
I believe that ballet is the foundation for all forms of dance! It’s like alphabet of movement; if you don’t know your ABC’s, then it will be very difficult to spell a word or write a sentence. As a result, I recommend incorporating the tendu, a basic ballet technique, into your exercise regime to strengthen your feet, which will ultimately improve your toe point!

“Ballet for Pole Dancers” is one of the first classes I created as part of THE METHOD at The Choreography House. Variations of exercise are incorporated throughout the class in order to develop strong feet for beautiful toe points, dancer safety and gorgeous lines!

Start working on your tendus and never hear the comment “Point Your Toes” again!!!
